Assessment

Assessments are often split into three types: "as", "for", and "of". (Lorna, 2003, p 2)

Assessment "as" learning are often at the early part of a unit, where the teacher gathers diagnostic information for guiding the lessons, as well as to provide feedback to students. Assessment "for" learning is often done during the unit for reporting grades and feedback to students. Assessment "of" learning is often done at the end of a unit or course, in order to evaluate what the student learned, often in the form of exams, tests, or projects.

Specific expectation:

F1.2 analyse, on the basis of research, ethical and legal issues related to an application of biotechnology in the health, agricultural, or environmental sector (eg, ethical questions related to access to an individual's genetic information)

The following is an organizer students may use while they explore the Ontario Science Centre. This can be used as assessment "for" learning during a unit to assess student learning and to guide lesson planning. It also contains assessment "as" learning to consider the student understanding of science from grade 11 and for the student to reflect on prior knowledge.
