STSE Application

We are constantly making decisions in life based upon integrated science, which includes science, mathematics, and technology (Hodson, 2011, p 6). Research shows most adults make decisions based on incomplete or incorrect knowledge. By having more scientific literacy, students would be part of a more "efficient, effective, safe and secure" community (Steele, Brew, Beatty, 2012, p 120).

Biotechnology has its benefits, such as being able to examine and analyze genetic information to interpret results for early detection of diseases, such as sickle-cell, when other scientific methods are not possible.

However, with the knowledge of genetic information to modify characteristics of organisms, ethical issues arise. These various issues provides an opportunity for students to investigate one of their choice and provide their opinion from their open inquiry.

A project that analyses the issues surrounding biotechnology.
